Abstract

The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of scientific approaches in modern Russian historiography to the assessment of the implementation of the Soviet industrial project in the 1930s. The main vectors, methodological innovations, and substantive conclusions of modern Russian historical science in assessing the goals, mechanisms, course, and results of the Soviet industrial project in the 1930s are systematized. The article examines the methodological transition from the monistic Soviet paradigm to a pluralistic research model, which became possible after the collapse of the USSR and the opening of archival funds. The work highlights and describes in detail three key areas of research on the subject: assessments of industrialization, collectivization, and the history of everyday life in modern Russian historiography. Within each of these areas, the interpretations of economic mechanisms, social consequences, human dimensions, and long-term outcomes of forced industrialization are analyzed.  Particular attention is given to controversial topics in contemporary historical scholarship, such as alternatives to the Stalinist model, the relationship between coercion and enthusiasm, and the connection between the industrial breakthrough and victory in the Great Patriotic War. A conclusion is drawn about the emergence of a dialectical approach in contemporary Russian historiography, one that recognizes the simultaneous achievement of macroeconomic results and high social costs. This allows us to view the Soviet industrial project as a deeply contradictory phenomenon. Russian historiography today demonstrates a mature, dialectical understanding of the Soviet industrial project of the 1930s. This period is no longer perceived solely as a "triumph" or "catastrophe," but is recognized as a deeply contradictory and multifaceted phenomenon. The main achievement lies in rejecting primitive, polarized assessments in favor of a multifaceted analysis that encompasses macroeconomic data and the geopolitical situation, as well as microhistorical details, social processes, and individual human destinies. Revolutionary technological advances contrast with archaic management approaches based on direct pressure and coercion unrelated to economic incentives. The creation of impressive industrial potential was accompanied by serious structural imbalances in the economy, where heavy industry expanded at the expense of the agricultural and consumer sectors. On the one hand, a society with expanded social prospects and growing prosperity was emerging. On the other hand, total control over citizens' lives, coupled with the erosion of traditional social ties, led to an uneven distribution of resources. The methodological basis of the study is a combination of analytical approaches based on the principles of historicism and objectivity, a combination of universal methods of analysis and synthesis, deductive and inductive approaches, as well as methods of bottom-up and top-down analysis, classification, and typification. The use of the historical-typological method, based on deductive-inductive logic, makes it possible to identify key patterns in the development of modern Russian historiography, formulate its chronological division, and propose a classification system for the main trends.
