Guidelines for Article Retraction or Correction

In accordance with the recommendations of the International Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the Association of Scientific Editors and Publishers, retraction is recognized as a mechanism for correcting published information and informing readers when a publication contains serious flaws or erroneous data that cannot be trusted.

Members of the editorial board are responsible for ensuring the ethical integrity of published articles. This includes identifying and addressing clear signs of unethical behavior, such as plagiarism, self-plagiarism, excessive self-citation, and conflicts of interest. If a violation of publication and/or research ethics is detected in an article, the journal’s scientific editor, based on the decision of the editorial board, must initiate the retraction process. Articles may be withdrawn either by the author(s) or by the journal’s editorial team. The editorial office carries out retractions in cases of publication and/or research ethics violations, adhering to COPE guidelines.

An article is subject to withdrawal/retraction if:

  • • There is clear evidence that the data obtained is unreliable or was acquired through unethical practices, such as data falsification.
  • • The manuscript was previously published in another journal before appearing in the Gumilyov Journal of History.
  • • Plagiarism is detected, including unauthorized use of images, graphs, tables, or other content. • The article contains significant errors that could negatively impact other researchers and their work, such as miscalculations or experimental mistakes.
  • • Copyright claims arise from third parties regarding the article or its individual components.
  • • The article contains information that contradicts the principles, standards, and norms of publication and/or research ethics.

In such cases, the journal’s editorial board conducts a thorough review. If retraction is warranted, a formal retraction report is prepared, confirmed, and signed by the scientific editor. A copy of this report is sent to the corresponding author.

Following retraction, the article is marked as retracted on the journal’s website, with the reasons for retraction clearly specified. The editorial office also publishes a retraction notice on the journal’s main page and includes details of the retracted article in the next issue.

The journal’s editorial team carefully, objectively, and thoroughly reviews all substantiated reports of ethical violations in published articles. The editorial office expects authors and reviewers to promptly inform the editorial team of any errors or violations they discover after publication.
